If you spend time outdoors, it’s important to know how to avoid encounters and what to do if something goes wrong. 🐍 Facts: Tasmania has only three native snake species • Tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) • Lowland copperhead (Austrelaps superbus) • White-lipped snake (Drysdalia coronoides) How to reduce the risk of a bite: • Step onto logs, not over them — snakes may be sunbathing on the other side • Avoid reaching into hollow logs or rock crevices • Stay alert, especially on warm mornings • Wear sturdy shoes and gaiters • Take extra care when moving through dense vegetation • Never attempt to handle or kill a snake • Give snakes space and move away calmly • Keep pets (especially cats) indoors as much as possible during the warmer months If a bite occurs: • Stay calm and call 000 immediately • Consider downloading the Emergency+ app — it provides precise GPS coordinates, emergency numbers, CPR guidance and safety information • Apply a firm pressure bandage (preferably a snake bandage) and do not remove it • Immobilise the limb and keep the person still • Do not cut the bite or use a tourniquet • Snake identification isn’t required — all native bites are treated with the same antivenom in Tasmania Knowledge, awareness and calm responses save lives — both theirs and ours. 🌿 Disclaimer: This video is illustrative only, not an official guide. Climbing tape can help prevent damage or get you through tough sessions, it’s not magic (and never quite as good as real skin), but when applied properly it really helps. Clean off chalk first, use thin overlapping strips, and don’t over do it — practice makes perfect. After the session: No magic fix, but post-crag care helps.
